  Entre 1966 y 1969, la música popular parecía decidida a derribar todas las puertas. Las canciones comenzaron a llenarse de guitarras bañadas en fuzz, armonías imposibles, órganos hipnóticos, letras surrealistas y experimentos de estudio que desafiaban cualquier norma. Era la edad de oro de la psicodelia, un movimiento tan amplio que podía abrazar el garage, el pop barroco, el folk, el soul e incluso las formas más contundentes del rock.

  FREAKMANIA! 2 reúne veinticuatro joyas nacidas durante aquellos años de creatividad desbordante. Desde nombres de culto como The Music Machine, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Bonniwell Music Machine, The Deviants u October Country, hasta grupos menos conocidos como Things to Come, The Pasternak Progress, The Odyssey o los mexicanos Kaleidoscope, todos comparten la misma ambición: explorar nuevos territorios musicales sin perder la fuerza primitiva del rock'n'roll.

  A lo largo de la sesión encontraréis melodías luminosas, atmósferas inquietantes, guitarras saturadas de fuzz, exuberantes armonías vocales, audaces experimentos de estudio y letras que se mueven entre la fantasía, la crítica social y el surrealismo. FantasticRetroSounds #23 - Hard Beat 2: Psyche Beat

 

  Esta semana os traigo lo que casi podría considerarse una continuación de la anterior sesión, Hard Beat.

  El recorrido es muy parecido: un viaje por algunas de las mejores y más insólitas grabaciones de library music de todo el mundo, aunque esta vez con una buena dosis extra de psicodelia. Las composiciones de Teo Usuelli, Ennio Morricone y Jannick Top son auténticos viajes para la mente, mientras que el resto de la selección se mueve con total naturalidad entre el psyche beat, el funk más explosivo y un rock contundente, demostrando una vez más que la library music producida entre finales de los años sesenta y toda la década de los setenta sigue siendo uno de los universos musicales más apasionantes por descubrir.

  Espero que disfrutéis del viaje que Hard Beat 2: Psyche Beat tiene preparado para vosotros...

  Pero procurad no perderos demasiado por el espacio...

Cult Files Vol. 4 - Rudi Protrudi: "The Creature That Time Didn't Forget"

 

  Few musicians have devoted an entire lifetime to keeping the spirit of garage rock alive quite like Rudi Protrudi. Best known as the driving force behind The Fuzztones, his story stretches far beyond the band that helped ignite the garage revival of the 1980s.

  Long before becoming one of the underground's most enduring figures, Rudi had already passed through a remarkable succession of projects. From his teenage beginnings with King Arthur's Quart in 1966, through the hard rock of Springhead Motorshark, the explosive bubblegum punk of Tina Peel, the glorious irreverence of Vulcan Death Grip, the reverb-drenched instrumentals of Link Protrudi & The Jaymen, and collaborations with Loveland, Craig Moore and a variety of solo projects.

  Rather than settling into a single formula, Protrudi has spent decades exploring garage, punk, hard rock, instrumental surf, rhythm & blues and psychedelia, always driven by a deep love of sixties music and an unmistakable personality. As a musician, record collector, producer and tireless champion of the genre, his influence has been instrumental in keeping the garage scene alive. Without people like Rudi Protrudi, it's hard to imagine the worldwide garage revival ever reaching the audience it enjoys today.

  This session spans almost five decades of recordings, revealing that behind The Fuzztones' unmistakable fringe and Farfisa organ there has always been a restless musician, driven by an endless need to create.

  Because some artists follow trends.

  Mucho antes de que Martin Denny, Les Baxter y Arthur Lyman convirtieran la exotica en uno de los sonidos más característicos de los años cincuenta, ya existía un fascinante universo de orquestas, directores y compositores que soñaban con selvas tropicales, islas remotas, volcanes, tambores africanos y los Mares del Sur... aunque muy pocos de ellos hubieran pisado realmente esos lugares.

  Este tercer volumen de EXOTICAMANIA! viaja hasta los verdaderos orígenes del género con una selección de veinte grabaciones realizadas entre 1930 y 1951, cuando el jazz, el swing, las big bands y la música latina comenzaron a abrazar paisajes imaginarios inspirados en África, Hawái, el Caribe, Oriente y la Polinesia. Era la exotica en su forma más primitiva, donde la fantasía importaba mucho más que la autenticidad.

  Durante el recorrido aparecerán figuras imprescindibles como Duke Ellington, Xavier Cugat, Artie Shaw, Raymond Scott, Spike Jones, Slim Gaillard, Sidney Bechet y Noro Morales, junto a pequeñas joyas mucho menos conocidas que contribuyeron a construir ese imaginario exótico muchos años antes de que los bares tiki y las portadas repletas de palmeras conquistaran Estados Unidos.

  Más que retratos fieles de culturas lejanas, estas grabaciones reflejan la visión romántica, ingenua y profundamente cinematográfica con la que el mundo occidental imaginaba aquellos lugares durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. Un viaje musical entre tambores, caravanas, selvas, rituales, volcanes y melodías tropicales que acabaría dando origen a uno de los géneros más singulares de la música popular.

  Porque toda expedición tiene un punto de partida.

  Y la exotica también tuvo el suyo.
