Cheap and Nasty #12 Lost Punk Rock Hits 1974-1982

 

  A dirty, explosive trip through the forgotten side of punk and its surroundings: proto-seventies fury, forgotten singles, international obscurities and flashes of brilliance that never made it into the official history books.

  The ride kicks off with Bad Brains' first self-released single, Pay to Cum (1980), and ends with its B-side, as if the whole 45 were being blasted at full volume. In between comes the first wave of Afro-punk: Death from Detroit, Pure Hell, who also appear on the cover, and South Africa's National Wake, challenging apartheid armed with guitars.

  Among the session's finest discoveries is Sulphate's Sit Back in Anger (1980), originally released on a split EP with The Pop Rivets, Billy Childish's first band. The outstanding Crisis EP is represented by two devastating tracks, while Italy's Tampax unleash the brilliant UFO Dictator, one of the great underground punk singles of the era.

  Another true oddity is Three Souls in My Mind with Intrépidos Punks (1980). They weren't really a punk band, but they recorded this explosive track for the Mexican B-movie Intrépidos Punks, a wild mix of street gangs and post-apocalyptic action with echoes of Mad Max. The rest of the session is packed with outsiders like Rubber City Rebels, Onion Dolls, Kandeggina Gang, The Inanimate Objects, Vice Creems, and many more who never made it into the canon, yet still sound dangerous, urgent and essential.

  Cheap, nasty and loud. Just the way it should be.

  If Born In The Garage Vol. 4 proves one thing, it's that the musical revolution of the sixties didn't happen only in London, Liverpool or New York. Beneath the surface of the chart hits existed an entire network of bands absorbing rhythm & blues, beat, soul, garage and psychedelia, then reshaping those influences into something rawer, tougher and far more exciting.

  Underground Echoes takes us straight to the heart of that scene. A journey through the wilder side of British and European beat, where razor-sharp guitars, overdriven amplifiers and a deep love of American R&B combined with the youthful attitude that would help pave the way for many of the sounds still to come.

  Here you'll find well-known names from the freakbeat underground such as The Birds, The Riot Squad, The Primitives, The Loot and Les Fleur De Lys alongside far more obscure groups that left behind little more than a handful of singles, yet still earned their place in the hidden history of sixties rock.

  The session moves effortlessly between hard-edged beat, high-voltage garage, electrified rhythm & blues and the first flashes of psychedelia. These are records born in smoke-filled clubs, modest recording studios and tiny stages where raw energy mattered far more than technical perfection. Decades later, they still retain the sense of danger and spontaneity that made the era so unforgettable.

  Although Britain provides much of the soundtrack, the journey also reaches Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand, a reminder that the beat explosion was far more widespread than the usual histories would have us believe.

  Twenty-two tracks where fuzz begins to take hold, riffs grow heavier and the spirit of garage collides with rhythm & blues and freakbeat to create a sound that remains every bit as thrilling today as it was nearly sixty years ago.

  A journey into the underground echoes of an unforgettable decade.

  De las catacumbas del rock'n'roll más macabro regresan los ecos de Bela Lugosi y de toda la estirpe de monstruos que dejó tras de sí. Vampiros, hombres lobo, científicos locos, enterradores, criaturas de ultratumba y horror hosts toman el control del tocadiscos en este nuevo especial de Halloween.

  Todo gira alrededor de aquella maravillosa fiebre por el monster rock que explotó a comienzos de los sesenta. El enorme éxito de Monster Mash convirtió cementerios y laboratorios en improvisadas pistas de baile, y pronto empezaron a multiplicarse twists transilvanos, fiestas con Igor, bailes de vampiros, coches fúnebres y canciones dedicadas a prácticamente cualquier criatura capaz de salir de su ataúd.

  Aquí encontramos al propio Bobby "Boris" Pickett, pero también a Vladimir & The Grave Diggers, Baron Daemon & The Vampires, Billy Lee Riley, Morgus & The Ghouls, Don Hinson & The Rigamorticians, John Zacherle y toda una pandilla de personajes empeñados en demostrar que los monstruos también sabían bailar.

  Y buena parte de la diversión está precisamente en esos horror hosts, personajes televisivos que presentaban viejas películas de terror entre decorados baratos, ataúdes, telarañas y chistes macabros, y que en ocasiones acabaron saltando de la pequeña pantalla al vinilo.

  Entre diálogos cinematográficos, twists, stomps, guitarras fantasmales y banquetes de dudosa salubridad, Lugosi's Legacy recupera veintiséis pequeñas monstruosidades de una época en la que el terror podía ser oscuro, absurdo y tremendamente divertido al mismo tiempo.

  Así que desempolva el ataúd, invita a Igor, aparta unas cuantas lápidas...

  ¡y que empiece el baile en el cementerio!
