Far removed from the chart hits that dominated the airwaves, this selection ventures into the world of overlooked singles, independent labels and remarkable voices that never achieved household-name status, yet left behind recordings that refuse to be forgotten.

  Fiery dance-floor favourites like Jackie Lee's "The Duck" and Chuck Wood's "Seven Days Too Long" sit alongside prized collector's items by Eddie Parker, Gene Toones, Rita & The Tiaras and Roger Washington. There's also room for the unmistakable Detroit sound, with several early recordings by The Parliaments, long before they evolved into one of the most groundbreaking forces in American black music.

  As the session unfolds, the tempo gradually gives way to deeper emotions: broken hearts, impossible romances and richly emotional performances from artists such as Mel Britt, Syl Johnson, Frank Beverly & The Butlers and Joe Hicks. All of it wrapped in lush arrangements, razor-sharp horn sections and the irresistible pulse that made soul one of the most powerful musical expressions of its era.

Asian Beats Vol. 3 Beat, Pop & Exotic Sounds from the Far East (1963–1968)

  Después de asomarse en varias sesiones anteriores, el explosivo sonido de la Asia de los años sesenta merecía por fin un espacio propio. Con esta tercera entrega, Asian Beats deja de ser una parada ocasional para convertirse en una serie con identidad propia dentro de Estación Zombie. El resultado es un viaje por algunas de las grabaciones más sorprendentes, vibrantes y bailables surgidas al otro lado del mundo durante la era beat.

  La ruta comienza en Singapur, uno de los grandes cruces musicales del sudeste asiático en los años sesenta. Allí, grupos como The Quests, Patrina o Fung Po Po absorbieron el rock'n'roll, el beat británico y el pop juvenil para transformarlos en un sonido fresco y con personalidad propia. A partir de ahí, el recorrido nos lleva por Malasia, Indonesia, Filipinas, Taiwán, Camboya, la India y, sobre todo, Japón, cuya extraordinaria escena musical dio lugar a un sinfín de bandas, cantantes y grupos instrumentales capaces de combinar tradición, modernidad y una inagotable energía juvenil.

  Chicas go-go, bandas eléctricas, guitarras reverberantes, versiones insólitas, ritmos frenéticos y melodías irresistibles desfilan a lo largo de una sesión que se mueve con total naturalidad entre el pop más refinado y la actitud más salvaje del garage. Son grabaciones nacidas en una época en la que el rock occidental se extendía por Asia a toda velocidad, adoptando una personalidad diferente en cada ciudad, cada idioma y cada escena local.

  Asian Beats Vol. 3 no pretende ser un estudio académico. Es, ante todo, una invitación a viajar. Un recorrido por clubes iluminados con neones, estudios de televisión en blanco y negro, pistas de baile abarrotadas y estudios de grabación donde Oriente y Occidente se encontraron para crear un sonido completamente único.

Sesiones Marcianas #62 - ITALIAN EXPLOITATION GROOVES 7

 

  Durante las décadas de los sesenta y los setenta, Italia se convirtió en la capital indiscutible del cine de explotación. Mientras Hollywood miraba hacia otro lado, los cineastas italianos llenaban las pantallas de asesinos con guantes negros, mansiones en ruinas, sectas satánicas, visiones psicodélicas, obsesiones eróticas, violencia estilizada y pesadillas teñidas de colores imposibles. De aquella extraordinaria explosión creativa surgieron cientos de películas de terror, gialli, thrillers, eurocult y relatos sobrenaturales que con el paso del tiempo acabarían convirtiéndose en auténticos clásicos del cine de culto.

  Gran parte de su magnetismo residía en la música. Aunque el nombre de Ennio Morricone eclipse inevitablemente a todos los demás, toda una generación de compositores extraordinarios contribuyó a definir el sonido de aquella época. Bruno Nicolai, Stelvio Cipriani, Gianni Ferrio, Alessandro Alessandroni, Daniele Patucchi, Riz Ortolani, Armando Trovajoli, Roberto Donati o Lallo Gori desarrollaron un lenguaje musical propio en el que convivían con absoluta naturalidad el jazz, el rock, el pop, el lounge, la experimentación y la vanguardia.

 Los ajustados presupuestos de muchas de aquellas producciones acabaron convirtiéndose, paradójicamente, en una ventaja creativa. Libres de muchas de las limitaciones impuestas por el cine más comercial, estos compositores aprovecharon la ocasión para construir paisajes sonoros irrepetibles, poblados de líneas de bajo hipnóticas, órganos fantasmales, coros inquietantes, ritmos obsesivos, guitarras psicodélicas y arreglos capaces de pasar de la elegancia más seductora al terror más perturbador en apenas unos compases.

  Esta selección recorre algunos de los títulos más fascinantes del cine de culto italiano, desde clásicos del giallo como La dama rossa uccide sette volte, Cosa avete fatto a Solange?, La coda dello Scorpione o La morte accarezza a mezzanotte, hasta territorios mucho más oscuros y extraños con películas como Tutti i colori del buio, The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, Cannibal Ferox, Frankenstein '80 o Seddok, l'erede di Satana.

  Temas melancólicos, grooves nocturnos, atmósferas lisérgicas, rituales ocultistas y momentos de una tensión casi insoportable acompañan este recorrido. Compuesta para dar vida a imágenes inolvidables, esta música hace mucho tiempo que escapó de la pantalla para demostrar que posee la personalidad y la imaginación suficientes como para sostenerse por sí sola.

  Apaga las luces.

  Corre las cortinas.

Sock It to Me, Baby! VOL. 6 — Surf Twang! Dance Beats! Instrumental Mayhem from the ’60s!

   El tocadiscos empieza a girar lentamente mientras la habitación se llena de guitarras cargadas de eco, reverberaciones infinitas y ritmos que parecen llegar desde una carretera desierta iluminada únicamente por viejos neones. En esta sexta entrega de Sock It To Me, Baby! nos adentramos en un universo de instrumentales, grooves nocturnos y melodías capaces de convertir cualquier salón en una película imaginaria.

  El viaje comienza entre aromas de exotica y surf con clásicos como Ich-i-bon #1, Snake Walk y la inmortal Mr. Moto. A partir de ahí, la ruta continúa por un paisaje de guitarras reverberantes, saxos errantes y ritmos irresistibles que dibujan auténticos escenarios cinematográficos. Francia, Gran Bretaña, los Países Bajos, Japón y Estados Unidos se cruzan en una misma carretera musical donde las fronteras desaparecen y solo importa el ritmo.

  Por el camino aparecen persecuciones instrumentales, carreras nocturnas, melodías bañadas en reverb y grabaciones que podrían haber escapado de la banda sonora de alguna película olvidada. El surf se encuentra con la exotica, el beat europeo se mezcla con el rhythm & blues y los ritmos bailables mantienen el impulso de principio a fin, recuperando el espíritu despreocupado que convirtió al single de 45 rpm en uno de los formatos más emocionantes de la música popular.

  Desde la elegante sombra proyectada por The Shadows hasta los explosivos instrumentales de The Cougars, Les Sorciers, René & His Alligators o The W-Gimmicks, cada disco añade una nueva dosis de ritmo, atmósfera y movimiento. Incluso cuando aparecen las voces, la sensación sigue siendo la misma: aquí nada se detiene.

  Sock It To Me, Baby! Vol. 6 reúne ecos lejanos, motores imaginarios, noches interminables y discos gastados que siguen conservando intacta su capacidad para llenar una pista de baile.

  If there was ever a golden age of garage rock, it was surely the period between 1964 and 1967. These were the years when thousands of teenagers discovered that a couple of guitars, an overdriven amplifier and plenty of attitude were all it took to start a band. The result was an explosion of singles that captured the restless energy of a generation like nothing before or since.

  Fuzz, Freaks & Forgotten Nuggets takes us straight back to that moment. A journey through garage rock at its rawest and most exciting, when the British beat boom, rhythm & blues and the first stirrings of psychedelia collided in suburban garages, teenage clubs and independent recording studios across America.

  The session brings together some of the genre's best-known names alongside a wealth of unfairly overlooked bands. The Seeds, The Electric Prunes, Shadows Of Knight, Paul Revere & The Raiders and The Knickerbockers rub shoulders with The Groupies, The New Breed, The Noblemen, Last Word, The Electras and The Bugs, all united by the urgency, rawness and youthful spirit that defined the garage sound.

  As the needle moves from one groove to the next, razor-sharp riffs, swirling organs, blistering fuzz, beat-inspired harmonies and the first hints of psychedelia begin to emerge. Acid rock and hard rock were still waiting just over the horizon, but the seeds of everything that followed were already beginning to take root.

  Most of the material comes from the United States, the epicentre of the garage explosion, although a handful of tracks remind us just how quickly the sound spread to any corner of the world where there was an electric guitar, a cheap amplifier and the urge to make a glorious racket.

  Twenty-three direct, unpretentious songs overflowing with personality. Music made by teenagers who could hardly have imagined that, decades later, their records would become prized possessions among collectors and garage devotees around the world.

  Because before the stadiums...

before the big budgets...

before rock stars...

there were garages.

  And that's where it all began.
