  Al principio pensé en llamar a estas recopilaciones Dark Funk, pero amplié un poco el tema. Me gusta creer que la etiqueta "dark funk" la he inventado yo (en realidad lo que invento son "palabras"), pero podríamos decir que existe todo un sub-subgénero dark funk. No el funky groovy alegre que se transmutó en música disco, sino otro más oscuro y agresivo. Baterías vigorosas a veces acompañadas de congas y percusiones exóticas, afilados riffs de guitarras fuzz y wah-wah, bajos implacables, teclados de todo tipo, efectos de retroelectrónica y sintetizadores inquietantes, orquestaciones cinematográficas y arreglos ominosos. No, el funk que aquí encontraréis no es el de discoteca… aunque podría serlo en un mundo paralelo más cool y siniestro. Es música dramática que te hace mover el esqueleto a la vez que envuelve tu mente en una obsesión psicodélica. Minimalismo opresivo que de repente estalla chisporroteante de electricidad. Y ambiente urbano y humano, brumoso y lleno de tráfico. La escena del crimen y cerca el sonido de las sirenas y las fábricas.

  Comienzo una serie de recopilaciones que ya sé que no van a ser tremendamente populares, pero que son de una temática que a mí me fascina y tenía ya ganas de publicar. Música de terror, suspense y drama, pero llena de marcha la mayoría. Porque estamos hablando de bandas sonoras y música de librería sobre todo setenteras, aunque abarcará un poco finales de los años sesenta hasta los primeros ochenta; es por ello que todo está imbuído por el pop/rock y la mayoría de los temas podríamos encuadrarlos en la etiqueta "funk", pero las fronteras entre éste, el beat, el jazz y la experimentación muchas veces se diluyen. Por tanto, abriendo el espectro me he permitido incluír algunas cosas muy poco o nada funk. Y también encontramos algunas composiciones más ligeras, no tan siniestras, siendo más ilustraciones musicales de acción. Queda patente que en los años setenta la música de bandas sonoras cubría ampliamente una cultura pop de luchas y dramas sociales, thrillers, el giallo italiano, la serie B y el cine alternativo, drogas, liberación sexual, blaxploitation y demás exploitations... y entre medias, los hippies y la posterior decadencia del movimiento. Todo ese espíritu lo encontraréis en la música de estas recopilaciones.

  Estoy bastante satisfecho con las sesiones que estoy haciendo, porque son muy personales. Es decir, que no me he dedicado a recopilar de previos recopilatorios ajenos, sino que son unas selecciones de las bandas sonoras originales, con el añadido de música de librería. Por tanto, la gran mayoría de los temas que incluyo (por no decir todos, pero eso no lo puedo asegurar) no se encuentran en recopilacones comerciales. Por ahora ya tengo cuatro sesiones confeccionadas. Esta es la primera, espero que os guste.

Sesiones Marcianas #39 HORRORMANIA! 3

 

  Las luces del autocine acaban de apagarse. La niebla comienza a cubrir el cementerio, un científico loco acciona el interruptor de su laboratorio y, en algún lugar, una vieja momia acaba de abrir los ojos. Bienvenido de nuevo a Horrormania!...

  En esta tercera entrega volvemos a sumergirnos en el universo del cine de terror clásico, donde monstruos, fantasmas, criaturas llegadas del espacio, vampiros, hombres lobo y experimentos imposibles compartían cartel con adolescentes rebeldes, coches descapotables y litros de rock'n'roll.

  A lo largo de esta sesión desfilarán momias resucitadas, casas encantadas, laboratorios siniestros, científicos dementes, monstruos de las nieves, criaturas del espacio exterior y toda una colección de personajes salidos directamente de los autocines, los programas dobles y las películas de serie B que marcaron una época.

  Como es habitual, la música se mezcla con anuncios de radio, tráilers cinematográficos y radio spots originales, convirtiendo la sesión en una auténtica cápsula del tiempo donde el horror y el rock'n'roll vuelven a caminar de la mano.

  Así que apaga las luces, prepara unas palomitas... y recuerda una vieja regla del cine de terror.

Cheap and Nasty #10 Lost Punk Rock Hits 79-83

 

  Last June, we were delighted to welcome Ron Lacer as our guest selector for Cheap & Nasty #8. His deep knowledge of obscure late-'70s and early-'80s punk, post-punk and new wave made him the perfect guide through some truly forgotten gems, so inviting him back was an easy decision.

  For his second appearance, Ron takes a different approach. Rather than following the familiar English-language route, he has assembled a collection of bands performing mostly in their native languages. The result is a fascinating journey through Austria, Mexico, Iceland, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Spain, France, Finland and Poland, proving that the spirit of punk spoke many more languages than English.

  Last June, Tony Rivers invited me to put together Cheap & Nasty #8. I had so much fun doing it that I decided to start a YouTube channel to publish more playlists. Since then, I've created over two dozen playlists featuring obscure punk, post-punk and new wave bands from around the world.

  When Tony invited me back for Cheap & Nasty #10, I decided to take a different approach. Most of the songs on #8 were sung in English, so this time I wanted to focus on bands performing in their native languages... though I cheated a little with one band. I pulled together some of the best tracks from my YouTube playlists, and here they are!   Starting off with three bands from Austria. The Sprays never got their own record out. This track is one of their three songs on the excellent Die Tödliche Dosis compilation LP. Ömö released just one single. This crazed tune is the A-side, and I've never managed to hear the B-side. Willi Warma put out a couple of singles, but this was an unreleased track that finally appeared on CD many years later.

  From Mexico comes Syntoma. Although they were mostly a synth-pop band, this song from their only album turns the energy up several notches.

  Next stop is Iceland. Grýlurnar were an all-female band who released several records, and this track comes from their second LP. Purrkur Pillnikk were one of the biggest names on the Icelandic scene, recording several albums and singles. Last year a massive box set collecting their work was released. I'd love to get my hands on a copy someday.

  Representing Italy is Edoardo Bennato, a hugely successful artist in his home country. Discogs lists no fewer than 179 releases under his name! Until recently I'd never heard of him, but I stumbled across this track from his sixth LP and immediately loved it. In fact, I liked the cover so much that Tony used it for this session's artwork.

  Germany contributes three excellent bands. Hans-A-Plast, fronted by Annette Benjamin, released three albums and a single, with this track coming from their debut LP. Bernward Büker Bande recorded two albums and four singles; this song is taken from their first album. Carambolage, an all-female trio, released two LPs, and this track also comes from their debut.

  Belgium is represented by Contingent, who only released one single at the time. In recent years several collections have appeared, combining old recordings with newer material.

  Spain brings together five very different bands. Madrid's Los Bólidos released just one single. Isidoro y Su Colección De Puertas Plegables only appeared on the legendary Sintonía Independiente compilation LP. Pistones became one of Spain's best-known pop bands, but here you'll hear the B-side of their debut single. Nueva Religión also appeared only on Sintonía Independiente. Finally there's La Uvi, who released one absolutely killer single. Amazingly, original copies are still fairly affordable, despite the fact that both tracks have been bootlegged several times. This has always been my favourite song by them.

  France is represented by two bands. Dum-Dum Bullet released this single before recording an LP a few years later. C.O.M.A. (Clinik Organik Muzak Anatomik) left behind just one album.

  The session closes with five bands from Finland and one from Poland. Mistakes recorded several releases, and this track comes from one of their last singles. Esa Toivonen ja Rantapallo, on the other hand, released only one 7-inch. Maukka Perusjätkä & Sota Apatiaa Vastaan recorded a single LP and nothing more. Listen out for the chainsaw on this song! Vaavi released a couple of albums and several singles; this track comes from their debut LP. Kauko Röyhkä & Narttu went on to record an impressive catalogue, and this is the A-side of their debut single. Finally, Poland's Brak never managed to release anything during the Communist era, although several posthumous collections eventually appeared in the 21st century.

FantasticRetroSounds #40 French Girls, 60s Fuzz Pop

 

  En Francia eran tiempos de la nouvelle vague y la rive gauche, con su revolución del lenguaje cinematográfico, y en la música popular la chanson se abría al rock'n'roll y destacaban autores como el incombustible y apreciado Serge Geinsbourg.

  De la mano de éste y otros tantos tendríamos el surgimiento de nuevos artistas, entre ellos muchas chicas jóvenes y bonitas cantando por y para la juventud. Francoise Hardy, France Gall o Brigitte Bardot fueron las más conocidas, pero no las únicas ni mucho menos, como podréis oír a continuación. La música pop era un hervidero de twist y shake-beat muy a lo galo, el ye-yé francés, que tanto influenciaría al resto de Europa, llegando a unos niveles explosivos de guitarras saturadas de fuzz. ¡Lo groovy estaba servido! Y éste es el aspecto que más me ha interesado destacar en esta sesión. French Girls - 60s Fuzz Pop!

Sesiones Marcianas #38 SPY-MANIA!

 

  Suena el teléfono rojo. La línea es segura. Tu misión, si decides aceptarla, consiste en sobrevivir a casi una hora de espionaje, persecuciones, mujeres fatales, gadgets imposibles y música con licencia para matar.

  A mediados de los años sesenta, el mundo entero cayó bajo el hechizo de los agentes secretos. El éxito de James Bond abrió la puerta a una auténtica fiebre del espionaje que invadió cines, televisores, kioscos... y, por supuesto, las tiendas de discos. De pronto aparecieron espías por todas partes: elegantes, misteriosos, impecablemente vestidos y siempre acompañados por una banda sonora irresistible.

  Esta sesión reúne algunas de las mejores melodías nacidas durante aquella edad de oro del spy craze. Temas procedentes de series como The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. o I Spy conviven con explosivas versiones de James Bond, películas Eurospy, bandas sonoras italianas, música de librería y una buena dosis de pop, jazz, surf y exotismo sesentero.

  Metales brillantes, guitarras twang, vibráfonos, bongós, órganos Hammond y orquestaciones llenas de suspense convierten cada tema en la banda sonora perfecta para una persecución por las calles de Roma, una misión encubierta en Estambul o un encuentro clandestino en cualquier club de luces tenues.

  Así que ponte el esmoquin, ajusta el silenciador y procura no revelar tu identidad.

Bati-Sonidos desde Ciudad Gótica Vol.2 Más Bati-Ritmos, Bati-Armonias y Bati-Sock! Pow! Zok!

 

  Holy vinyl, Batman! The Bat-Signal is lighting up the skies over Gotham City once again... and that can only mean one thing: there are still plenty of records left to discover.

  If the first volume proved that the Batmania of the 1960s reached far beyond comic books and television, this second installment shows that the imagination of musicians, producers and record labels knew no bounds. During those years, any excuse was good enough to dedicate a single to the Caped Crusader, Robin, Batgirl, the Penguin, the Joker or, of course, the Batmobile.

  This time you'll find fewer straightforward versions of the Batman Theme and many more oddities. Novelty songs, garage, surf, '60s pop and delirious instrumentals sit alongside tracks inspired by Gotham's rogues' gallery, impossible chases and musical adventures that sound as if they were lifted straight from an episode starring Adam West.

  The final stretch shifts into instrumental territory, where orchestras and library music take over, proving that Batman's universe also found a home among Hammond organs, explosive brass sections, twanging guitars and rhythms perfectly suited to another high-speed chase in the Batmobile.

  So fasten your utility belt, fire up the Batmobile and keep your eyes on the sky.

 Because as long as the Bat-Signal keeps shining over Gotham City... there'll always be another forgotten 45 waiting to be discovered.
