Cheap and Nasty #4 Lost Punk Rock Hits 77-82

 

  After three volumes digging through the outer edges of punk, Cheap and Nasty returns with another collection of songs that never set out to conquer the charts, but were determined to leave a scar on everyone who heard them.

  Between 1977 and 1982, punk had long since ceased to be a purely British phenomenon. Its shockwave had spread across the globe, giving rise to distinctive local scenes and hundreds of small independent labels releasing records on shoestring budgets, fuelled by attitude and absolutely no intention of asking for permission.

  This fourth volume brings together some of those lost gems. From the savage blast of Pure Hell, one of the very first African American punk bands, to the raw fury of Raped, The Panik and V2 in the United Kingdom; through the uncompromising intensity of The Ex in the Netherlands, the Australian underground represented by X and The Suicide Squad, the explosive sounds of Japan courtesy of Mirrors and Flesh, and a handful of American bands that kept punk's roughest, most streetwise spirit alive.

  As with every Lost Punk Rock Hits collection, immediate anthems, infectious melodies and razor-sharp guitars sit alongside bands that managed to record only one or two singles before vanishing forever. Some would eventually achieve cult status, while others remained forgotten for decades, but they all shared the same urgency and the same irresistible need to make noise.

  The session closes with a fascinating historical curiosity: the teenage Beastie Boys, long before becoming one of the most influential groups in hip hop, reminding us that punk has always been a meeting place for musicians determined to break every rule.
