Born In The Garage Vol.2 Biker Exploitation Soundtracks

   If the first volume of Born In The Garage explored the wilder side of garage, beat and psychedelia, this second instalment heads in a much more specific direction: the dusty highways, roadside bars, outlaw bikers and exploitation films that roared across America's drive-in screens during the second half of the sixties.

  When Roger Corman released The Wild Angels in 1966, the biker movie found its definitive formula. Motorcycles, violence, youthful rebellion, black leather and a soundtrack every bit as aggressive as the images on the screen. Much of that unmistakable sound came from Davie Allan and his various "ghost" groups, studio outfits assembled specifically to record music for these films. Allan forged a style built around fuzz-drenched guitars, explosive instrumentals and an energy that seemed to roar straight out of a Harley-Davidson tearing down an empty highway.

  From there, an entire parallel musical universe emerged. Producers, composers and musicians began creating records specifically designed to accompany high-speed chases, bar-room brawls, biker funerals and aimless rides into the horizon. Jerry And The Portraits, Casey Kasem, Max Frost & The Troopers, Paul Wibier, Davy Jones & The Dolphins, Somebody's Chyldren and Harley Hatcher all belong to this fascinating world where garage rock, psychedelia and exploitation cinema collided.

  The session explores some of the genre's essential soundtracks, including The Wild Angels, Devil's Angels, The Glory Stompers, The Cycle Savages, Angels From Hell, Hellcats, The Wild Racers, Satan's Sadists and the wonderfully offbeat Girl on a Motorcycle. Along the way you'll also hear original radio spots, promotional dialogue and other period fragments that help recreate the atmosphere of films that always promised more noise, more speed and more danger than mainstream cinema ever could.

  Special mention must go to Fred Cole and The Lollipop Shoppe, whose appearance in Angels From Hell provides an unexpected link between the underground garage scene and the world of B-movie biker films. Equally impossible to overlook is the ever-present Davie Allan, whose fuzz guitar serves as the thread running through the entire session.

  Born In The Garage Vol. 2 is more than a collection of records. It's a road trip through a world where motorcycles never stop roaring, amplifiers are permanently on the verge of blowing apart, and every bend in the road leads to another blast of fuzz, psychedelia and counterculture.

  This is only the first journey into the world of biker movie soundtracks.

  Given the wealth of extraordinary music those films produced, it certainly won't be the last.
